The First of Many Conversations

Last week at J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference, we gathered for an intimate conversation on something that sits at the center of everything we do - the relationship between the brain, the body, and the environments we move through.

Our founder, Jiali, had the chance to sit down with her friend and fellow neurotech founder, Avery Krieger, to reflect on his path to neuroscience, what it means to build in such a fast-moving space, and what questions actually matter as we move toward increasingly comprehensive models of human state.

From a deeply personal confrontation with the brain, to studying under one of the most influential neuroscientists of our age, Avery recounts his journey to neurotech and how his experiences have shaped what he is building at Constellation.

We discussed the intimate relationship between the brain and the rest of our physiology, and why our smartphone is one of the best BCIs out there. We also highlight the importance of considering our surroundings - and by way of that, culture - when trying to understand the millions of neurons contained within us.

Ultimately, our conversation kept coming back to one thing: that building tools for the brain should be both rigorous and deeply human. The hardest problems that remain won’t be technical, instead, it’ll be surfacing meaning: knowing what matters and how to present insight without overwhelming or reducing the human experience.

This is top of mind for us at Soma. As such, last Thursday was the first of many gatherings we’ll host to collectively imagine and rethink the future of neurotechnology, brain health, and human performance.
